Interview Relay: 42 Stories of the Tokyo Marathon ~ Connecting Hearts~

This time, we introduce the inspiring story of  Eu, who, as Central America’s first visually impaired para-athlete, aims to complete Abbott World Marathon Majors(AbbottWMM).

My goal is to complete all of the Abbott World Marathon Majors

――Out of the interview relay articles published now, which one resonated with you the most? At which kilometer mark was that runner featured?

The interview that impressed me the most was the one at the 3km mark. I was deeply inspired by the story of Mr. Masazumi Soejima, the Wheelchair Race Director.

――What is the biggest appeal of the Tokyo Marathon, the point that makes you want to run it?

As a para-athlete, and Central America’s first visually impaired para-athlete, my goal is to complete all of the AbbottWMM. So, participating in the Tokyo Marathon, one of those majors, holds a very special meaning for me. Additionally, I’m very interested in Japanese culture and especially impressed by the orderliness and politeness of the Japanese people.

A 20th anniversary theme song would be amazing

――Please tell us about a Tokyo Marathon related episode or story that moved you.

Everyone who has run the Tokyo Marathon emphasizes the high level of organization and safety throughout the event. This isn’t just during the race itself, but also in the fantastic management before and after. I was also deeply moved to hear how the entire city of Tokyo warmly welcomes and supports the runners who come for the marathon.

――The Tokyo Marathon will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027. To become the world’s best race, what are your expectations for the Tokyo Marathon, or what improvements would you like to see?

As the 20th anniversary approaches, how about producing official merchandise, such as special commemorative medals, jackets, and T-shirts? This would allow participants to take home tangible memories of the event and spread the appeal of the Tokyo Marathon around the world. It would be a delight not only for the runners themselves but also as gifts for family and friends.

Also, as a milestone for the 20th anniversary, it would be a wonderful idea to incorporate live performances of traditional Japanese music along the entire marathon course. Because I have a visual impairment, information I obtain through hearing is very important. The flow of traditional music would allow me to enjoy the atmosphere of the Tokyo Marathon more deeply.

Furthermore, it might be interesting to create an original song for the 20th anniversary and share it on social media and other platforms as the event’s theme song prior to the race day. I think that song could become an official slogan for the marathon, creating a wonderful sense of unity among the participants.

A personal objective and the opportunity to experience a culture I admire

――What does the Tokyo Marathon mean to you? #MyTokyoMarathon is…?

For me, the Tokyo Marathon is a personal goal, an opportunity to experience an admired culture, and a show of respect for all the preparation that goes into this amazing event. I’m also thrilled to be able to challenge myself in a city that provides the perfect environment for improving my own pace.

It’s also a joy and a huge opportunity to connect with many runners and spectators from around the world and share positive energy. I want to use the Tokyo Marathon to show the world that all barriers are mental and that any goal can be achieved with strong desire and effort.
