Interview Relay: 42 Stories of the Tokyo Marathon ~ Connecting Hearts~

This time, we introduce a wonderful story of Maksym Slobodianyk who will run the Tokyo Marathon which will become his first Abbott World Marathon Majors race.

A Unique Journey of Immersive Cultural Experience

――Out of the interview relay articles published now, which one resonated with you the most? At which kilometer mark was that runner featured?

I’d say Takaya Mitsuka’s story at the 11km point resonated with me the most. I’d summarize the article in one sentence: a marathon is not just about running. Love that quote!

――What is the biggest appeal of the Tokyo Marathon, the point that makes you want to run it?

I’ve always enjoyed not just running races but also experiencing everything the hosting country has to offer. The Tokyo Marathon feels like a perfect mix of running passion and rich Japanese culture. Running through Tokyo’s lively streets, from historic places like the Asakusa Kaminarimon Gate to modern landmarks like the Tokyo Tower, is a unique way to experience an immersive cultural journey. Added to that are the cheering crowds, the marathon’s strong reputation for great organization, and the warm hospitality of the locals. All of this makes it a dream event for me. It’s even more special because it will be my first Abbott World Marathon Majors race, making it an unforgettable milestone in my running journey.

Inspiring story of Mr. Yuki Kawauchi

――Please tell us about a Tokyo Marathon related episode or story that moved you.

One story that really moved me is about Yuki Kawauchi. In the 2011 Tokyo Marathon, he placed third despite working a full-time government job. What makes his story so inspiring to me is that he achieved this without sponsorships or fancy equipment, relying solely on his passion and dedication. His story speaks to me because I truly believe that consistency and hard work can lead to great heights, no matter the circumstances.

――The Tokyo Marathon will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027. To become the world’s best race, what are your expectations for the Tokyo Marathon, or what improvements would you like to see?

My expectation for the Tokyo Marathon is that it will continue to stand out as the safest, most exciting, and warmest race globally. As it celebrates its 20th event, I hope to see more opportunities for participants to experience the city’s rich culture, perhaps through more interactive cultural displays and stronger connections with local communities. You can also come up with some extraordinary events during the Tokyo Marathon Expo and after-party events.

A Special Place Etched in My Heart

――What does the Tokyo Marathon mean to you? #MyTokyoMarathon is…?

For me, the Tokyo Marathon is a premium stage where I, along with other participants, can write our own stories. While running through the course, I love feeling the unity with the cheerers, exchanging high-fives, and sharing moments of pure joy. It’s a wonderful journey through Tokyo’s dynamic cityscape, filled with small discoveries and a deep sense of spiritual connection. As my first Abbott World Marathon Majors, it would hold a special place in my heart.
